Hi:
I wrote this program named RECITE that reads TEXT files out loud.
You can choose different voices etc. It is enclosed as a .HQX file.
Detailed documentation is included in the .HQX file.
Thanks

Subject: [*] Brian's Sound Tool 1.3 (16 bit, stereo)
This update to Brian's Sound Tool adds stereo and 16 bit sound support, as
well as improving a few other key interface areas and fixing many bugs.
The program will now try to open anything, is a lot more forgiving of junk
in headers, handles multiple sounds in a single file (like system files,
Sound mover Suitcases), and will even have a shot at text files.
For those who came in late...
Brian's Sound tool is a drag and drop sound coversion utility designed
mainly for transfering files between the Macintosh and Windoze.
It works under system 6 or 7, supporting the required Apple events under
system 7.
Output is a mac sound file if the input isn't from a mac, otherwise the
output is a Windoze file. Input can be either of those plus a bunch of
others like sound blaster .VOC files, Sun/NeXT .au, FSSD (either HCOM or
not), 8SVX, and AIFF files.
There were a few bugs that caused the program to crash when dealing with
stereo or 16 bit sounds in the past (because it ignored the fact) which
have now been fixed.
You can now cmd-. out of playing large sounds.
You can also convert 16 bit sounds to 8 bit, and stereo to mono. These are
the default settings if your mac can't play 16 bit sounds (i.e. doesn't
have sound manager >= 3.0) or can't play stereo sounds.
I have also fixed a bug in the output to same folder as input preference,
as well as put some proper automatic file name generation.
Mac file names are now stored in text areas inside the WAV or VOC files and
used as the name when converting back so you dont loose your long names.
They are ignored by Windoze and OS/2 but should be a pleasant surprise when
someone gives you a copy of their latest WAV files and you discover that
they used to be Mac sounds before that.
Some doco is included.
The program is free.
Enjoy

Subject: [*] deadend-10.hqx
DeadEnd is a shareware program written by my son Wolfgang Thaller.
It is a nice strategy game with seventeen levels of increasing difficulty.
The object of the game is to create a path out of a dungeon by pushing
away heavy pieces of stone which are blocking the exit. Especially the
higher levels are very tricky. You have to move the pieces in the
correct order, because a piece pushed to the wrong place
could be an obstacle for removing other blocks.
The program has been tested on a number of different Macs (SE, Mac II,
Centris, Quadra). It works best under System 7 with 14'' (or larger)
monitors set to 256 colors, but it also runs in black and white.
Use it under System 6 at your own risk. The new sound manager
improves the quality of sound and music.

There have been some debate on what is the best solution
for viewing a very large file for a while. As far as I
remember, the result was something like "there isn't really."
Well, attached application may be the answer for this problem.
Attached is a stuffited binhexed file of Edit7, a freeware
text editor written by Mr.H.Iimori.
Edit7 is a text editor which can deal with:
1) an extremely big text file (upto about actual memory + 60MB
subject to the availability of the hard disk space)
2) take advantage of script manager (no support for right
to left writing language yet.)
3) can show line number
4) regular expression search and replace
5) wrap line
6) window split (can do many)
7) multiple view of a file
8) multiple windows
9) drag&drop editing of text bloc
10) multiple undo
and more and more....
This editor is still under development, so some features
are not yet implemented (e.g. print preference dialog has
no effect.)
Documentation is in Japanese, but I presume most of the
features can be figured out by the user without much
problems. I did not add any English explanation in compliance
with the 4) bellow.

Do you think the Finder is too slow and clumsy when navigating through your
folder structure? Do you perhaps use a hierarchical Apple menu utility but
are tired of zigging and zagging your mouse from submenu to submenu? Or
maybe you just like color icons. If so, then you should try Greg's Browser.
Displaying multiple folders in a single window, Greg's Browser lets you
simultaneously see the contents of a folder, its parent, and a subfolder,
providing a quick and easy way of moving both up and down through your
folder hierarchy.
Greg's Browser requires System 7 and Color QuickDraw.
Version 1.3 fixes the conflict with A/UX and improves the handling of
invisible files. It also plugs a small memory leak and reduces overall
memory usage and code size. Happy holidays!

This is a heirarchial menu demo I downloaded off BMUG, then made
run on Think C 5.0.4.
It teaches how to make hierachial menus by "hot wiring" them, as
the ones in the Symantec Think C demo project "Bullseye." It uses
a resource only for the 'ICON' and 'ALRT' resources, but if someone
wants to use a 'cicn' they need only dump the 'ICON" and put in a
'cicn' of the same ID. The 'cicn's can be from 8 x 8 pixels to
64 x 64 pixels or anything in between. An 8 pixel high by 64 pixel
wide 'cicn' with a space for the menu name is a unique format.

Those that didn't, had trobule with my typnig ;) I should have put:
GET NETTOOLS PS - (for a PostScript

Actually, that second command may be redundant for you privileged Info-Mac

those data waves were the biggest I've ever seen. So you get the Plain Text

Install the fonts CouRier, Helvetica, Symbol & Times in your system.
The game is very easy : you have to draw a mosaic with 6 colors (at least) on a
checkerboard by moving a cursor. This places a different color each time you
move it according to the direction it gets.
You can create (Drawing mode) or recreate (Playing mode) a mosaic, save it,
display it where when and as you want, play a blind game, with a limited number
of moves, a limited time, bonus/malus, inversion of moves I
You can also entirely customize the game and choose your cursor, background

Rebuild Projects v1.1
by Mark Alldritt
author of Script Tools & Monitor
Rebuild Projects is a AppleScript script which is usefull if you use
THINK C 6.0.1+ to develop software involving a number of seperate THINK C
project files. Rebuild Projects uses a parameter file to govern the order
and type of operations performed during the build process.
The parameter file can direct Rebuild Projects to compile certain projects,
move files, and empty folders. Additionally, the script is simple enough
(less than 150 lines) that you can add your own verbs to the parameter file
syntax to extend the script into areas you might find usefull.
Rebuild Projects requires AppleScript 1.0 or later, and Script Tools 1.3
or later. Script Tools is available from the Info-Mac archives and other
sites.

Subject: Battery Not Charging in 140 - Solution!
I have yet to verify that this is my problem, but it's what I'm hearing
>From a couple of people. My power adapter was, in fact, boinkered.
Checking it with a multimeter shows random fluctuations between four and
sixteen volts. Here's the trick, though:
Many voltage problems cause a microfuse on the logic board to fry, not
allowing current to the battery. The machine works fine, but no juice goes
to or from the battery. So, all you need to do is replace the microfuse
and you're all set. It's soldered in there, and most Apple Dealers go the
easy way, they just replace the whole logic board, which acording to the
Apple Dealer Repair manual is a $699 repair with 48 hours turnaround.
So, if your powerbook's doing the same thing, pop it apart, or get someone
to pop it apart and check that microfuse. I can't be more specific about
where it is . . . but it'll save you MEGA bucks.
Hope I saved someone the same headache I've had for the past two days now.
An especially big headache, since when I asked "do you think maybe a fuse
is blown?" the AUTHORIZED DEALER said no, there aren't any fuses in there.

Subject: Broderbund Software Problems (Q)
========================================================================
I purchased Broderbunds Treehouse from MacConnection in early December.
I have a Macintosh IIsi with 17MB of RAM and am using System 7.1. My
daughter loves the Treehouse software but it continually locks up my
system! Both of us are really frustrated!
I called the MacConnection support people and their first suggestion
was to turn off all Extensions. The next time my daughter got locked
up using Treehouse I Restarted holding down the SHIFT key to turn the
Extensions off. This did not solve the problem at all. I remembered
that I should try turning off the 32-bit Addressing mode which I did
with no success. I have tried various combinations of Extensions and
Addressing to no avail. MacConnection was at a loss and they gave me
an 800 number to call Broderbund but indicated that I would probably
have to end up using the 415-382-4700 number to get Technical Support.
Before I pay for a timely long distance call (paying for technical
support is another issue alltogether) I would like to hear from the
persons on this list about things I may try to solve my problem. I
would just return the software if my daughter didn't like it so much.
If I cannot do anything to solve the problem, can I do something to
gather more information for the Technical Support people at Broderbund?
Does anyone have a 800 number for Broderbund (mine is at work) that I
could try?
One last item. Two days ago I tried to get into the Memory Control
Panel to double check the 32-Bit Addressing mode and I got an Error
Window. Basically my Memory Control Panel had been trashed! Was it
the Broderbund software or was it a bug with System 7.1? Maybe I need
to get help from Apple!
Thanks in advance for ANY help!

Hello netter,
I'm interested in buying a golf game for a Mac IIci computer. I know of two
games: Mac Golf and PGA Tour Golf. I bought Mac Golf when I owned my first
Mac (SE) but this version does not work with my present IIci. I found this
game to be slow and difficult to install on a hard drive because of the
copy protection. So, I would probably avoid this game. As for PGA Tour Golf,
I downloaded the demo version from the archives and I like it although I find
the small screen size to be a problem. Does the full version have a 640 x 480

I would appreciate any feedback from people who bought either of these golf

realism, speed, color, 2 player option, and last but not least, price. Are
there any other golf games for color Macs?

Subject: Help! My Mac is sooo slow.
I am having a few problems with my LC520. I am running 7.1 with a bunch of
extensions which I will detail below. Two problems being that A) The virtual
memory doesn't always happen at startup. When I check the Memory CP it is still
on, but I don't HAVE the memory. and B) When I restart+shift my machine is
really fast, but when I disable ALL extensions ,fonts and CP's with Extension
Manager it doesn't speed up. I disabled them one at a time, restarting each
time to see where the problem was but had no luck. Even with all of them off
it didn't speed up. Like I stated, when I restart+shift it is super fast.
Ok, the extensions I have are:
Disinfectant INIT
Directory Assistance II
EM Extension
Gatekeeper
Gatekeeper Aid
!DeskPict
720K Floppy Disk Formatter
ADB Fix
Apple CD-ROM
Arabic Extension
Arabic Number Extension
CD Remote INIT
Eyeballs
FaxMonitor
FaxPrint
FDeep Thought 2.0.3
Foreign File Access
Hardware System Update
ICON Wizard INIT
Network Extension
No Eject
QuickTime
Record Button
Sound Manager
Speech Manager
Startup Screen Picker
WorldScript I
Apple Photo Access
Audio CD Access
Control Panel Handler
Finder Help
Foreign File Access
Hardware System Update
High Sierra File Access
ISO 9660 File Access
NoEject
SupraFAXModem V.32bis
Not all of the extensions are always on, though if I knew which I could
disable since I only use my CD for audio I'd have even less going.
Well, I hope that someone an idea what is causing my problems.
Thanks in advance!!

I have a IIsi at home that is always having problems with the sound. My

is it a software problem? I guess it could be that the speaker is not

What alternatives are there to fixing the speaker problem? Does Apple

Subject: LC 520 monitor
My brother-in-law bought a LC520 a couple of weeks ago at the
university he works at and has been very happy with it, except for
one thing. He says there is a thin grey horizontal line running
across the screen approximately two inches from the bottom. When he
went back to the computer store at his campus, the salesperson told
him this was absolutely normal with Mac (Sony) Color Displays. He
was shown a larger Mac monitor that was on display and it to had the
same grey horizontal line near the bottom. I find it hard to believe
this problem is "normal". Could I please get some feedback from
anyone who might know more about this. Thanks.

Larry,
You are correct in stating that the Macintosh does not do what people
consider to the 'true' multi-tasking. Rather, it is capable of cooperative
multi-tasking. That is, applications are responsible for cooperating with
the Operating System.
Applications that weren't written with this cooperativeness in mind won't
allow your file transfers to take place in the background. Likewise, your
background functions will grind to a halt when the foreground application
is doing some processor intensive task.
In your example, it's to be expected that your transfer will slow down
while opening an application (FullWrite Professional). Your examples are
all processor intensive tasks. Did you check to see how your transfer
progresses while you're actually using your word processor (typing or
whatever). My guess is that you'd get some decent background action.
Don't get me wrong. I am waiting, sometimes impatiently, for some 'true'
multi-tasking on the Macintosh. Until then, I'll put up with what we have
the best I can.
Take care.

Hi Sandro,
Oh, I agree with you, but after nearly ten years of Mac use, I've
been waiting for a LONG time. grin. I would like to say that I
disagree with your statement that "it is to be expected that [a]

Perhaps expected from a Mac programmer's point of view, but
certainly not from a users' point of view who is used to another platform.
And I certainly wouldn't expect this behavior from a 840AV.

I recently purchased MacInterComm Lite for $24.95. Actually, this
is a pretty good program and for the most part, allows me to do a lot of
work while some lengthy downloads are occuring.

I just wanted to point out that with First Class BBS's you cannot download
more than one thing at once. If you start more than one download, it
actually uses a queue system. That is, only one file is downloaded at a
time and once it is finished, it moves on to the next. Same net effect, I
guess.
Also, the first class software seems to behave a little better than most
other telecom software when it comes to downloads (but not uploads) which
it does by tiptoeing around some of apples programming guidelines.
If you want the best telecom software for multitasking, get MacIntercomm.
You can actually hold the mouse button down during an entire download or
upload session without a hangup. You can even format a floppy during a
session. <<Standard Disclaimer>>
With that said, I agree that the mac needs some sort of OS level scheduler
AND memory protection (note that preemptive multitasking has little if
anything to do with memory protection, which seems to be commonly
believed).
I reserve the right to be wrong.
Happy Holidays!

In info-mac V11 #245 there were several messages concerning problems with
downloading in the background.
Some of these problems could be handshaking problems:

This sounds like incoming characters are being overwritten. If hardware
handshaking is used, this shouldn't happen. The problem could be that
hardware handshaking is turned off, either on the Macintosh, modem or both,
the cable may not be correctly configured for hardware handshaking, or
AppleTalk has been turned on.

>me fix it?
This sounds like you are using a standard hardware handshaking modem cable,
where pin 20 on the modem side (DTR) has been connected to pin 1 on the
Macintosh side, and where your modem settings include a setting to use DTR
to force the modem to hang up, usually &D2.
When hardware handshaking is being used, pin 1 is used to signal that the
Macintosh is busy. As pin 20 on the modem side is used to signal a forced
hang up, the modem will hang up, when the Macintosh is busy.
Try changing the setting to &D0.

First a couple of things need to be stated: First class does
not report errors or transfer speed. So, I do not know how
much the transfers may have been slowed down, or if there
were errors... With that aside, based on the discussions I
have been following here, the key seems to be minimal mouse
activity. I am one of those people who uses my (turbo)mouse
only when forced. Due to the interrupt levels and
priorities, mouse activity seems to be a good way to can your
transfer. So, for example, my activities could not have
included drawing something with superpaint. Tetris is a zero
mouse activity program, so once again this might be the key.
I will try Zterm in the near future and see how much my
transfers slow down in the background.

We use a program called Keyserver Light from Sassafras
software. You can copy Pagemaker to anyone's hard disk, make
as many copies as you like etc. Or, you can just leave one
copy on the server, it doesn't matter. The way it works is
you set up keyserver to allow x number of users, in your case
six, so that only six people are allowed to run it
simultaneously. When that seventh person tries, they are
told that a key is unavailable and must wait. It is pretty
well done, but fairly expensive. We bought Keyserver light,
which has a user limit of 32 for $595.
If you make something for free, let us know! As for PC's
being easier to set up networkable programs? Give me
break. Just a lame tech support answer....

I'm looking at the Performa 550. I'd like some answers to

unfortunately, the salespeople can answer these questions:
1) Is the access time 350 milliseconds or less?
2) Does it have "double speed" or "double spin" capability?
3) Can it play "multisession" photo-CDs?
4) Can it play audio CDs? I.E. does it have the software to

Two readers recommended using Mouse2, a control panel that can double the speed
of the mouse. This CP, available in the /info-mac/cfg directory, works without
rebooting and takes no additional system heap (according to Symbionts). Howeve
Mark.Lomas@cl.cam.ac.uk gave this suggestion for the non-ResEdit-phobic:
--- (begin included message) ---
There are 7 mcky resources numbered 0 to 6. These contain the
thresholds at which acceleration takes place. For example mcky 6 (the
fastest) on my system contains the values 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 15, and
21. If you reduce the three final values then you will increase the
acceleration when the mouse moves quickly. For example you might try
the three values 6, 7, and 8. It is a good idea to ensure that the
numbers always appear in ascending order so that you can recover the
situation if the mouse accelerates too quickly to be usable.
Note that each mcky resource corresponds to one radio-button in
the mouse control panel. I suggest editing mcky 6 which will change
the behaviour when the fastest setting is chosen in the control
panel.

I couldn't agree more with Alexei that WordPerfect 3 is a joke. I have
been a MS Word user forever and I also was biased IN FAVOR of WordPerfect
because of WorldScript.
After installing WP and using it for about 10 seconds I couldn't believe
how slow it was. Beyond slow! When you release the mouse after scrolling
a document, the screen painfully redraws. I found myself saying "c'mon,
you can do it." Changing the insertion point simply by clicking the mouse
>From one place to another took about 30 seconds. Crazy!!
Not only is WP slow, but it is loaded with bugs. I also use Russian, and
the only feature of WorldScript that works was font-switching. No word
recognition, no sorting, no nothing. My friend uses both Chinese scripts
(Simplified and Traditional), and WP wouldn't even recognize Simplified.
I read a review of WP somewhere (was it TidBits?) that was very
complementary. Is this the same program?? I honestly don't see how this
program could actually be released. It's not even beta. It simply doesn't
work. I have returned it.

I was assured by my local dealer that programmes that supported worldscript

I tried the Wordperfect Demo, which someone mentioned here as supporting
worldscript. (I assume that is correct?) I did indeed see the Hebrew

I realize that Nisus exists and I know its pros and cons....
BUT what I really want to know is wheter this worldscript business will

or whether the right-to-left problem will be left up to the individual
programmes to overcome.
